Within Temptation is a symphonic metal ensemble originating from the Netherlands, established in April 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. The band has been categorized within various musical genres, with critics acknowledging their innovative approach and musical adaptability.
Following the release of their inaugural album, “Enter” (1997), which maintained a foundation in gothic metal, Within Temptation gained significant recognition within the Dutch underground music scene. Their breakthrough into mainstream awareness occurred in 2001 with the single “Ice Queen” from their second album, “Mother Earth”, which attained the second position on the Dutch music charts.
Following their initial breakthrough, Within Temptation achieved unprecedented domestic recognition by securing the Conamus Exportprijs — a prestigious Dutch music industry honor — for four consecutive years, eventually capturing a fifth award in 2016. The band’s commercial dominance solidified with back-to-back studio releases, “The Silent Force” (2004) and “The Heart of Everything” (2007), both debuting at No. 1 on the Dutch charts while significantly expanding their international footprint. To showcase their dynamic range, the group issued two distinct live projects: 2008’s “Black Symphony”, recorded alongside the Metropole Orchestra, followed by 2009’s “An Acoustic Night at the Theatre”, which reimagined their symphonic metal catalog in intimate acoustic arrangements.
