“With “Meliora” I began to truly expand my vocal range” – Ghost’s Tobias Forge shares his story as a metal vocalist

It’s virtually impossible to overstate how far Ghost has come since emerging from Tobias Forge’s imagination in the early 21st century. What began in Linköping, Sweden has evolved into a global phenomenon that transcends the label of “Scandinavia’s foremost theatrical rock export.” With nearly 10 billion streams, five GRAMMY nominations (including a 2016 win for “Cirice“), a platinum-certified single, and a series of international chart successes, Ghost has created something truly unique in the modern music landscape.

The band’s ambitions have grown alongside their expanding profile, recently culminating in the highest-grossing hard rock cinema event in North American history with their feature film debut “RITE HERE RITE NOW.” As Ghost continues to strengthen its bond with its worldwide legion of devoted followers, the connection formed between the band and the faithful who find refuge in Forge’s created world stands as a singular cultural phenomenon.

After years of extensive touring—spanning from before 2022’s “Impera” through their spectacular U.S. finale at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum in September 2023—Forge embarked on an unexpected creative direction: an inward journey. Disconnecting from the relentless 24-hour news cycle, he emerged from this self-imposed informational exile with the framework for what would become “Skeletá”—a collection of ten new songs that cut closer to the bone than ever before.

“Skeletá” which will be released on April 25th via Loma Vista Recordings is more than just a collection of songs—it forms a cohesive thematic journey. Beginning with the anthemic “Peacefield,” the album progressively explores darker spiritual territory through the bittersweet melodies of “Lachryma,” the hook-laden first single “Satanized,” and the soul-searching epic “Guiding Lights.”

The album’s second half charts a path back through this darkness toward renewed optimism. Songs like “Cenotaph” explore existence beyond the physical grave, while “Marks Of The Evil One” pairs ominous themes with surprisingly joyous refrains. After the carnal turn of “Umbra,” the journey concludes with “Excelsis,” whose seemingly mournful tones actually convey a promise of eternal life—reinforcing the album’s overarching message that all dark periods eventually come to an end.

To gain deeper insights into this new chapter and Forge’s artistic evolution, Chaoszine recently traveled from Helsinki to Stockholm for an exclusive conversation with the Ghost mastermind himself. In our interview, Forge takes us through his remarkable journey as a vocalist—from his early years screaming in extreme metal bands to becoming the distinctive clean vocalist fronting one of rock’s most theatrical acts today.
