The Fix was established in March 1980 by Steve Miller on vocals, Craig Calvert on guitar, Mike Achtenberg on bass, and Jeff Wellman on drums. In March 1981, the band released a single on Touch and Go Records, titled “Vengeance” b/w “In this Town,” produced in a limited pressing of 200 copies, which has become one of the rarest punk rock records, with a value reaching huge amounts, as this article explains! The band also contributed the track “No Idols” to the 1981 Touch and Go compilation EP, “Process of Elimination”. In January 1982, Touch and Go issued “Jan’s Rooms”, a four-track 7-inch EP by the band. They performed on several significant concert bills, including appearances with the Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., Flipper, Black Flag, among other prominent punk bands, before disbanding in early 1982. Subsequently, Miller and Achtenberg formed the band Blight, which also featured Tesco Vee of the Meatmen as vocalist. During its four-month existence, Blight recorded a self-titled 7-inch EP, released posthumously in 1983. In 1983, Miller briefly played guitar in Strange Fruit, a band that included Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth on drums, and they released a three-song 7-inch single titled “On Top of a Hill” through Babel Records. Meanwhile, Jeff Wellman returned to Northern Michigan and pursued a career in real estate in Boyne City. Craig Calvert continued to perform with various bands, most recently with a Chicago-based blues ensemble. Miller is currently working as a journalist in Lansing and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 by The New York Times.
