“We’re actually heading into the studio to record our third album” – interview with Vulvarine

Austrian hard rock powerhouse Vulvarine are one of the bands that performed at this year’s edition of Summer Breeze. We chatted with drummer Bea about the festival, future plans of the band and more.

I’m here with Bea from Vulvarine. How are you doing today?

Bea Heartbeat: Hi. Well, hot. Yeah, it’s middle of August, hot here on Summer Breeze. But other than that, I’m doing great. It’s a great festival and I’m happy to meet you.

Likewise. And yeah, you’ve been touring all summer with so many festival appearances. Did you enjoy festivals as audience? And if so, which ones? 

Bea Heartbeat: Oh, as audience. Well, we play so many shows in a year that usually for one day I’m the artist and I try to stick around. For example, we played our show yesterday already, but we decided to stick around and just be guests like today. But yeah, I have to say… Summer Breeze, but from the location, the most beautiful is Tominator. It’s in Slovenia. It has this beautiful turquoise river and you can have a swim there and get refreshed. I visited Brutal Assault, but I think that was already three years ago, but we didn’t play there. That was just my private choice to go there and hang out. Yeah, that was also great.

With the band, you won the Amadeus Music Award this year. Can you share with us, what were you doing when you got the notification that you won or that you were nominated?

Bea Heartbeat: The Amadeus works like that. You have a couple of nominees in each category, who were nominated for the hard and heavy. So we got notified that we are nominated, which came in as a surprise. We were excited about it. But they announced the winner live during the show. It’s a live TV show and of course, that was a precious moment. Plus, we also got to perform there, which was also super nice. It’s cool that we got that kind of exposure because we reached a lot of new people because it was on TV and stuff. It’s a thing in Austria.

That’s just so fantastic. For you, because you’re an amazing artist, but also because you’re a female artist. And sometimes people don’t appreciate that enough.

Bea Heartbeat: Yeah, that’s the message we want to carry also. I feel like in the Austrian scene, there are so many great female artists, but they’re sort of never in the first row. So that also shows something, that there’s a change going on. We’re happy about that.

For sure, 100%. So you have a lot of experience with live shows and you have a lot of experience also in the studio and working on music. Do you think that the life of an artist is a lonely life?

Bea Heartbeat: But for me, it means quite the opposite. I feel never lonely, sometimes it can feel a bit much even, of course. But for sure, you have those periods where you tour a lot and play a lot live and you meet a lot of people, artists and fans. And that’s great. Then there are other phases where you sort of work more on your music. But also there, it’s like we’re a band. So there’s five people working on stuff. So no, I never feel alone. I feel so connected to the world and to the music and to people like actually never before in my life.

That’s cool. So what is the band’s plan for the rest of this year? If you can share anything.

Bea Heartbeat: Yeah, sure. I mean, we’re concluding the festival summer soon. So we play our last show next week in Czech Republic. It doesn’t get calm after that because we’re actually heading into the studio to record our third album. And we want to release that in the first half of ’27 if everything works out. So there’s going to be a lot of work, of course, in autumn and planning the whole release and recording the stuff.

That’s amazing news. So I’m Italian. And I wanted to ask you, what are your favorite pizza toppings?

Bea Heartbeat: Well, I’m a vegan. So I found out that actually a really well made marinara can be perfect. I don’t need a lot of stuff on top of this. If you have a really good tomato sauce, some basil, oregano and a good dough…. That’s for me, the perfect pizza.

Can you share with us your family’s reaction to your band?

Bea Heartbeat: My mom, I think, is one of our greatest fans. My biggest supporter. She was also there at the Amadeus Awards in the live audience. It just means so much because as a woman of her age, she’s turning 70 next year. She went through a lot already in her life and women were treated differently a couple of decades ago. So for her, it’s really a revelation that we can do this and that we fight our way through and that we are there with this message. That’s just for me also so great to see and to have that support. She was super proud. She also comes to concerts once in a while. But yeah, that was a special moment, of course.
