Founded in Los Angeles in 2019, Wings of Steel lives and breathes 1980s hard rock and heavy metal. The band’s music is a distinctive blend of classic styles, brought to life by vocalist Leo Unnermark’s powerful delivery and guitarist Parker Halub’s expressive playing. Wings of Steel is currently back on tour in Europe, including stops in Germany, Spain, and – for the first time – Finland! Chaoszine caught up with founding members Unnermark and Halub to find out what’s been happening since their last interview, what they expect from this tour and more. Read the full interview below!
Hi again! How’s everything going?
Busy, but good! It’s nice to be back out in Europe on tour again!
I interviewed you almost exactly a year ago — what has happened since then?
There have been two really major developments; Firstly, the release of our first live album last December titled “Live in France” (recorded during our EU tour last year at our headline show in Lille, France). Secondly, the production of our upcoming studio album “Winds of Time”. The first single from the album (the title track “Winds of Time” was released earlier this month with a full music video to go with it.
What kind of feedback did you receive on the live album?
Overall, the live album was received really well! We were not planning on releasing one, as it’s not typical to release one so early on in the career. But we ended up having the show in France recorded beyond our knowledge, so we decided to release it and share a piece of our live show with the world. This was very important to us as there are still many places in the world we have not been able to perform in, so being able to capture and share a taste of our live show with our fans all around the world was very special for us.
And there’s a new studio album coming soon – what can you tell us about it?
As mentioned previously, the first single and self titled track of the album “Winds of Time” was released on June 13th, alongside a full length music video. Musically, and thematically, this song is the perfect introduction to the sound and energy of the album. More information about the album will be coming at the end of July, so stay tuned for this!
Is there any unforgettable gigs or wild moments from the road you’d be up for sharing?
We are already 4 shows into our current EU tour and every show has been met with a tremendous energy from the crowd. That said, we performed a massive show in front of several thousand people at Heavy Week-End in Nancy France, where we opened for bands like Europe and Dream Theater. Being able to perform on such as massive stage in front of so many people was just mind blowing.
What can we expect from the shows in Finland and Europe?
A kick ass and fully live heavy metal show. You’ll hear tracks from all corners of our catalog, as well as a few surprises that you won’t be able to hear us play anywhere other than live. We unfortunately had to cancel our show in Turku, Finland due to unforeseen circumstances. But we will be there full force in Helsinki!
What are you most excited about when it comes to the European tour?
The most exciting thing for us is sharing and performing our music live with our fans. On this tour we get to play in some places we have and have never been to before, which makes every show a really cool experience. This, and of course we get to do some things live that aren’t heard on the record, which is always really fun.
So in Helsinki you’ll be sharing the night with Nightstryke and S.P.I.T – do you guys know their music already?
Yes, they are really cool bands. Excited to be sharing the stage with and having them on the show with us!
Thanks again for your time, and welcome to Finland and Europe! Got any fun shout outs or messages for the Chaoszine readers?
Thanks for having us again. Shoutout to On the Rocks in Helsinki for hosting our first ever show in Finland, and to S.P.I.T and Nightstryke for joining us on the bill to make it a truly kickass night to remember. And for our fans in Finland and EU – get ready, we are super excited to bring our live show to you!
