“Wake Up Dead” takes Wasted Wizards into different territory, bringing a darker, more emotional edge to their Hard Rock roots, with My Chemical Romance among the clearest reference points.

The shift also fits the subject matter. The lyrics deal with loss, loneliness and grief, giving the song a more vulnerable character than much of the band’s previous material. Those themes are carried into the accompanying video, where the emotional side of the track becomes an important part of the story rather than simply a backdrop for the performance.

Musically, there is little time for an introduction. “Wake Up Dead” takes off immediately at high speed with huge guitars and a verse built to stick after the first listen. Layers of backing vocals add weight as the song develops before opening into a huge chorus designed to be sung back at the band.

Wasted Wizards have not forgotten where they come from. Just when the song appears firmly rooted, Sam Mårtensson brings it back towards the band’s Hard Rock roots with a full-blooded, classic Rock ’n’ Roll guitar solo.

That contrast is one of the things beginning to define Wasted Wizards. Rather than settling too early into one particular version of Hard Rock, the four young musicians are allowing their influences to stretch in different directions. Previous releases have drawn openly from Van Halen, Extreme, Hardcore Superstar and Mötley Crüe; “Wake Up Dead” adds another piece to the picture without losing the guitar-oriented character at the heart of the band.

Alongside Sam, Leo Mårtensson’s vocals move comfortably between the more immediate verses and the song’s large, layered chorus, while Alvin Hilmersson on bass and John Danielsson on drums keep the track moving at a relentless pace.

The single follows “Wannabe Rockstar”, which introduced the forthcoming “Wake Up Dead” EP with a rougher, more street-oriented side of Wasted Wizards.

The complete “Wake Up Dead” EP will be released on October 16, offering the clearest picture yet of a band that is very young, still developing and increasingly willing to find out how far its sound can go.
