Canadian progressive thrash metal band Voivod is about to make a new documentary film called “We Are Connected”.

The documentary will delve into the band’s multi-stage career all the way from its beginnings to sharing the stage with bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden, as well as the changes in the lineup from the death of Dennis “Piggy” D’Amour to the arrival of Daniel “Chewy” Mongrai.

The documentary will be directed by Felipe Belalcazar, who previously directed the documentary film “Death By Metal” which told the story of death metal legend Death.

Voivod has just launched a new crowdfunding campaign for their documentary. The goal is to raise $36,512. You can contribute here

The press release follows:

‘Every once in a while—like some kind of astral event—art and life intersect to challenge and radically push the limits of convention. Unabashedly progressive in their sound and unashamed of their eclectic roots, Voïvod’s logo along with Korgüll — their mascot — have become ubiquitous with progressive music and can be found adorning jackets and walls the world over.

From unlikely origins in northern Québec at the height of the Cold War, Voïvod’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi aesthetic, fuelled by a youthful obsession with their instruments, took them from underground success to sharing dates and tours with Iron MaidenRush, and Metallica.

There were, of course, high and lows throughout those 40 years, from major-label support and Billboard recognition to seismic line-up changes and an event many critics claimed to be the end of Voïvod: the death of co-founding guitarist and composer Dennis “Piggy” D’Amour.

Despite adversity, and perhaps by cosmic intervention or just serendipity, Voïvod found guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain; subsequently, the band re-ignited their engines and laid a course back to Morgöth via numerous live shows around the world, a comeback album in Target Earth, singles, EPs, and finally, the late-career triumph, The Wake. In 2019, Voïvod were recognized by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences with a Juno Award for best hard rock/metal album of the year for The Wake.

True to their DIY roots, Voïvod have joined forces with metal film director Felipe Belalcazar, to make their official documentary, We Are Connected. “We have worked with Felipe in other projects and we have a mutual understanding of Voïvod’s story,” says Michel “Away” Langevin.

Exclusive interviews and archive access combined with Away’s artwork will take you on a sci-fi, thrash-metal journey into the Voïvod dimension. “We managed to film about a quarter of the interviews planned before the pandemic hit in March 2020, and plan to resume production once cross-border restrictions are lifted,” adds Felipe.

The band and management, along with past members Jason Newsted and Eric Forrest, fully endorse the making of We Are Connected. Director Felipe Belalcázar has a proven record of delivering quality productions to millions of metal fans around the world, most recently the critically-acclaimed Chuck Schuldiner documentary DEATH by MetaL.”
