On April 10, in Indio Valley, California, melodic hardcore stars Turnstile performed the first of two Coachella gigs this month, as per theprp. The band performed for the first time since their former guitarist Brady Ebert was arrested on March 29th for allegedly purposefully running down William Yates, the 79-year-old father of Turnstile singer Brendan Yates. According to the police report, William had a broken leg in the event, and surgery was necessary since a bone was left exposed. Ebert is still being held on suspicion of first-degree assault and attempted second-degree murder. Since then, Ebert has disputed the police’s version of the violent incident, claiming he acted in self-defense. William gave this to the Coachella crowd in a pre-recorded greeting introducing his son’s band.
I’m Bill Yates, I’m the proud father of Brendan. They’re all sons of mine. They’ve been practicing in the house for about 13 years now, just recently they grew too big for the basement. And finally now, after a dozen years, practically, they’re at a point where the larger the venue the better, because they just enjoy the energy. To all the fans out there, we love you and Turnstile loves you, enjoy the ride.
Turnstile‘s 12-song performance also included a tribute to the late Bo Lueders of the Harm’s Way/HardLore podcast, with a heart encircling his name taped to one of their onstage amplifiers. Lueders died on April 02.
