Under the name Inearthed, guitarist Alexi “Wildchild” Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen founded Children of Bodom in 1993. Since they were young children, they had been friends and had a mutual love of heavy metal, particularly death metal bands like Dissection, Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, and Obituary, as well as classic metal bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Dio, and Ozzy Osbourne. The band’s original lineup was completed by bassist Samuli Miettinen. In August of the same year, Inearthed recorded “Implosion of Heaven”, their debut demo.

For the two years that he played with Inearthed, Miettinen was the primary lyricist; nevertheless, his family’s 1995 transfer to the US made it difficult for him to stay with the band. The lyrics of the tracks from Inearthed’s second demo, “Ubiquitous Absence of Remission”, which marked their first collaboration with producer Anssi Kippo at Astia-studios, were his final contributions to the band. This demo marked the first time the band used keyboards in their songs. Laiho and Raatikainen accomplished this by playing the keyboards independently and then combining the recorded track with the other instruments. Laiho took on the position of the band’s lyricist after previously simply writing the songs’ melodies.

Raatikainen was playing French horn in a local big band at the time. He met Alexander Kuoppala, a talented guitarist and trumpet player, during a rehearsal. Kuoppala was asked to join Inearthed as a rhythm guitarist shortly after their second demo was recorded. Henkka “Blacksmith” Seppälä, whom Laiho and Raatikainen had met in school, took Miettinen’s place on bass and provided backup vocals at the beginning of 1996. Jani Pirisjoki was also hired by the band to play keyboards.
