Metal music has a history of being used for many purposes other than enjoyment. For example, bands like Metallica and other metal music have been known to be used both for torture and interrogation, because when played at high volume, metal music (or indeed any music) causes pain to the listener.

During the Winter War, the Finns were known to have used, for example, traditional song “Säkkijärven polkka” to jam the radio frequencies of Soviet soldiers. Now, in Ukraine, a somewhat similar activity is reported to have been carried out, although instead of the Säkkijärven polkka, soldiers are said to have played, for example, Pantera.

This was reported on Twitter by Illia Ponomarenko, a journalist for The Kyiv Independent:

“Yes, the Ukrainian military jams Russian radio communications with heavy metal music. Guerilla Radio has a couple of suggestions making such a playlist even more enjoyable for defeated Russian forces leaving the Kyiv area”, Ponomarenko writes and links “Walk” by Pantera into the tweet.
