Yesterday, Bruce Springsteen traveled to Minneapolis to make an appearance as the “very special guest” promised for Tom Morello‘s benefit for the families of shooting victims connected to ICE, as per Loudwire. Just two days before the concert at First Avenue, the sold-out “A Concert of Solidarity & Resistance to Defend Minnesota!” was announced. Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s families would benefit financially from the event, according to a Facebook post made by Morello on January 28. On January 7, a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and murdered Good, 37, in Minneapolis. On January 24, Pretti, 37, was shot and killed in the city by several US Customs and Border Protection officers.
Al Di Meola, a flamenco/jazz fusion guitarist, singer/songwriter Ike Reilly, and members of the Chicago punk band Rise Against were among the original lineup. Springsteen was the “very special guest” that Morello had promised in the announcement. Springsteen‘s response to the murders of Good and Pretti, “Streets of Minneapolis,” was released just hours before Morello announced the benefit on January 28.
Setlist:
On Friday, Springsteen told the audience at First Avenue that he sent Morello the song to see whether he thought it was too “soapboxy.”
He said ‘nuance is great, but sometimes you have to kick them in the teeth’ – Bruce Springsteen
Later, Morello and other performers joined Springsteen on stage to wrap up the performance. The former guitarist for Rage Against the Machine urged the audience to leave the building and peacefully participate in the demonstration outside in the streets.
