Timo Tolkki, Finnish guitarist and composer, has revealed the release of his most recent song, “Faust,” which is based on the well-known book by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. The perpetual predicament of Faust, a man who sells his soul to the Devil in return for limitless knowledge and material pleasures, is explored in the song. “Andre Matos – Maestro Do Rock” documentary filmmaker Anderson Bellini also directed the song video.
Musically, I tried to create something a bit more modern, with a lot of detail in the track, especially when listened to with headphones. I think it features some of the best guitar work I’ve been able to record in years. I felt deeply inspired while composing and recording ‘Classical Variations And Themes 2: Ultima Thule’. Nearly the entire album was composed in a place 40 kilometers outside Helsinki, Finland’s capital, where I spent about a month and a half in a cabin in the middle of a beautiful nature. This project was particularly special for me because I wanted to capture the essence of Faust’s inner conflict, as he struggles between the pursuit of knowledge and the ultimate price that comes with it Timo Tolkki
The video is based on the well-known tale of Faust, in which the main character, unhappy with his life as a scholar, strikes a deal with Mephistopheles. Faust gives prey to magic and worldly pleasures throughout the bargain, which ultimately results in catastrophe. In Goethe’s version, however, Faust is saved by heavenly intervention and the innocence of Gretchen, the young lady he seduces.
