Author Benedetta Baldin - 28.2.2026

This past month, Sabaton conducted a survey that examined the most popular musical genres on the internet, as per MetalInjection. And you know what? Rock has the top ranking. Sabaton‘s particular study approach was using Google’s ‘Keyword Planner,’ which enabled them to monitor and examine search volume data for various musical genres in the UK over the course of a full year. Their results revealed that rock and metal are among the top 5 most searched genres. The top 10 music genres in the UK vary, however the first and fourth most popular genres receive about 20,000 more searches each month.

  1. Rock – 44,986
  2. Electronic/Dance – 38,037
  3. Pop – 27,670
  4. R&B/Soul – 25,790
  5. Metal – 24,484

  9. Indie/Alternative – 11,790
  10. Hip Hop/Rap – 5,701

With a full year of search tracking revealing that rock and metal are currently among the top five most popular genres, the research produced some rather startling statistics. It feels like the metal and rock scene has expanded rapidly in recent years, and a rock renaissance is on the horizon.

It’s fantastic to see both rock and metal ranking so highly in these search results. The UK has always been a stronghold for rock music, with its rich history of producing legendary bands that shaped the sound of modern music. “The fact that metal ranks in the top five is particularly meaningful. Metal has always had this remarkable ability to build passionate communities around it, even without the same level of mainstream exposure that other genres receive. Rock music’s enduring popularity in the UK isn’t surprising when you consider its deep roots in British culture, from the British Invasion of the 1960s to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These movements influenced UK music and transformed global music culture. – Pär Sundström

Rock was searched 43,000 times more frequently per month than instrumentals, according to the study, which also revealed a number of extremely underappreciated genres. Below are the top five least searched genres; all information is attributed to Sabaton.
