Following a significant lineup change, thrash metal mainstays Overkill are not wasting any time in their next steps, according to MetalInjection. The New Jersey veterans have been producing and demoing content for Scorched’s sequel for just over a year. The band gave fans a sneak peek at the composition process earlier this week when they posted a message from their newly hired drummer, Jeramie Kling, revealing that he has been using a Roland electronic set. Overkill’s fast-paced, riff-driven thrash sound is new to Kling, who commented, “Loving my new Roland kit,” adding that it has been a great tool for “writing” and “demoing” sessions. In August 2024, Kling formally took over as Overkill‘s drummer, succeeding Jason Bittner, who had done so since 2017. Kling’s resume is extensive, but he is most recognized for his work with Venom Inc. (he appeared on their 2022 album “There’s Only Black”) and as a founding member of The Absence. He has played with FORE, Ribspreader, Goregäng, Necromancing the Stone, and for a short time with Massacre, which brought him together with Terry Butler (Obituary, ex-Death) and Taylor Nordberg (Deicide) to form Inhuman Condition.
The band’s unwavering work ethic is demonstrated by Overkill‘s choice to get right into new music with Kling. Having released almost 20 studio albums and played for more than 40 years, the band is still evolving while retaining the thrash ferocity that made their 1980s hits. In the drum department, Kling’s arrival might herald new vitality and possibly even some technical experimentation. He might also have an impact on the next record’s production strategy because of his background behind the console. Fans are currently limited to speculating about the sound of Overkill‘s upcoming release. There is little doubt, though, that the veterans are not slowing down with a renewed lineup and fresh material in the works.
