Finnish vocalist Johanna Kurkela is a musician with several albums released in her native language Finnish, but in the last decade her career changed when she began composing and releasing albums in English, either in the trio Auri, alongside her husband Tuomas Holopainen, or with Eye of Melian, which draws inspiration from Tolkien’s works. Both bands have given a new direction to the singer, who always puts sensitivity and love into each of her works, whether with her voice or violin.
In 2022, Eye of Melian, founded by Martijn Westerholt, known for Delain and Within Temptation, released its first album, and in February 20th of 2026, the second, titled Forest of Forgetting, will be released via Napalm Records. Kurkela is the lead vocalist of the group, which creates an ethereal and symphonic sound, always mixing literature with visual forms of expression, which will soon be on stage, as the group prepares for a European tour at the beginning of the year.
Promoting the new record, Chaoszine sat down with Johanna in Helsinki, Finland, to talk about her busy year with both bands releasing albums and touring together, finding herself as an international artist and her love for fantasy. Check it out!
