Actor/musician Jason Momoa, a lifelong metalhead, hosted Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne‘s final gig in Birmingham, UK, in July. He also joined the mosh pit during that historic sendoff when Pantera were on stage. Momoa has been outspoken about his admiration for bands like Primus, Pantera, Black Sabbath, and others over the years. He has even had the opportunity to hang out with several of his metal idols. Therefore, in the most recent episode of Track Star*, he was required to identify different tunes from several heavy metal titans, putting his metal knowledge to the test, as per theprp. The game started off quite easy with a notorious track from Black Sabbath to which he stated:
I don’t know how to tell you why I love Black Sabbath. They’re just… that’s my heartbeat. I love them with every ounce of my soul.
He revealed that he discovered Black Sabbath thanks to Metallica.
I actually found Sabbath through Metallica. I grew up with a single mother who raised me on Motown, so it was definitely all Motown and blues and jazz… So I experienced… like I found funk like Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers and that kind of stuff through skateboarding and then Metallica; just like when you see MTV, when it was — I know that’s not around anymore — when it was, seeing [the music video for] “One“, the first metal video — I think it was one of the first metal videos — it blew my mind. And then through Metallica [I discovered Black Sabbath].
Later, Momoa referred to Metallica as his “pals” and named his personal favorite albums as their first three: “Kill ‘Em All,” “Ride The Lightning,” and “Master Of Puppets.” For the remainder of his challenge, he shared his opinions and admiration for a variety of bands, including nu metal pioneers Korn, industrial metal legends Nine Inch Nails, alternative metal giants Tool, new wave of British heavy metal standard-bearers Iron Maiden, rap-metal pioneers Rage Against The Machine, and grunge stars Alice in Chains. Momoa almost had a flawless run with his challenge.
