Evan Saxon Productions (ESP) has purchased the worldwide theatrical rights to the upcoming feature-length documentary film “Billy Idol Should Be Dead,” which is produced by Live Nation Studios and directed by three-time Grammy winner Jonas Åkerlund, as per Blabbermouth. The movie chronicles the life and career of Billy Idol, a punk pioneer who went on to become a rock ‘n’ roll superstar. The documentary delves deeply into Idol’s emergence as the quintessential punk rocker, his meteoric rise as a global superstar in the MTV era, and the numerous obstacles he had to overcome to not only survive but to remain one of the most beloved figures in rock & roll, nearly fifty years into his career, through never-before-seen archival and personal interviews with Idol, his family, peers, and collaborators.

Last summer, the movie debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and went on to qualify for awards. Early in 2026, the movie will be widely released in theaters. We’ll be sharing more details soon. “Dying To Live,” an original song by Idol and Academy Award-nominated writer J. Ralph, is included in the movie and is on the shortlist for “Best Original Song” at the 98th Academy Awards. “Dying To Live” is the focal point of the film’s coda sequence, which was written by Idol and Ralph together with longtime Idol colleagues Steve Stevens, Tommy English, and Joe Janiak.
