As the Swedish rock band The Grand Trick announced on their social media accounts yesterday evening (7 November 2026), their bassist and founding member Jonas Malmqvist has passed away “a few days ago” following a “battle with cancer”:
“We are heartbroken to have lost our bass player, Jonas Malmqvist. Jonas was one of the founding members of the band and played a huge part in building it and shaping its journey over the years. Just a few days ago, he sadly lost his battle with cancer. Everything about this band carries Jonas’s spirit, and everything that lies ahead for The Grand Trick will be done in his honour and loving memory.”

The band goes on to say:
“He was an incredible friend, bandmate and musician. With his great sense of humour and sharp intellect, he always had a way of hitting the nail on the head and leaving a lasting, unforgettable impression on everyone around him. In his final days, Jonas was longing to come home from the hospital so he could start composing music again. We were all looking forward to that, never imagining that things would take such a tragic turn. You are missed more than words can express, Jonas. We will love you forever.”

Hailing from Linköping, The Grand Trick describe themselves as a rock band “with the agenda to enrich the scenery with soaked swampy dark futuristic tunes of southern gothic influenced rock”. Their latest single, “Forgotten Crossroads“, was released in September 2026. You can check out its lyric video below:
