The end of an era – review of Megadeth’s final album

Author Benedetta Baldin - 23.1.2026

I don’t know about you readers, but writing these words makes me incredibly sad. While we can still enjoy the band during some extensive touring, it is still getting closer to the end. Megadeth have just released their final self-titled album now, so let’s dive into it.

The thrash metal group has delivered a very solid product, with excellent production, mixing and mastering. This is exactly how thrash metal should sound like, and as soon as the album progresses, it gets better and better. The first time I saw Megadeth live was back in 2023 at Wacken Open Air, and while their performance was spectacular, I was very hesitant when it came to Dave Mustaine’s singing voice.

Despite this, he seems in excellent form in the album, showing no sings of weakness or indecision in his craft. What can I say about the rest of the band? Well, Teemu Mäntysaari is a state-of-the-art guitarist, elegant and sophisticated, James LoMenzo is rightfully present in the mix as he should, and Dirk Verbeuren balances his drumming as it’s needed by the track.

The singles released have been fantastic choices, and if you liked those, you’ll like the rest of the album too. This is an album released by a band that is not afraid to speak their mind; they know their worth and they give it all for us to enjoy. After more than 40 years in the business, Megadeth has not diminished the quality of their output.

One of the most influential bands worldwide says goodbye to the scene with a fantastic full-length. Going out while being at the top of their game isn’t something everybody can do, but Mustaine and company made a very smart decision. So enjoy “Megadeth”, since it’s the last of a kind.
