We had the pleasure of chatting with the belgian band Signs of Algorithm after they played at Alcatraz festival. We discussed their music, the Prince of Darkness, pizza and serial killers!
Hi and welcome on Chaoszine!. Can you introduce yourselves to our readers?
Frederikc Vanhille: Hey guys, we are Science of Algorithm. We just played the Swamp Stage on Alcatraz and we had a fucking blast.
You’ve just released “Sunchaser”. How has the press and the fans welcomed the album?
Frederikc Vanhille: People are very excited about it, so that’s really cool for us. People are streaming a lot, we’re getting good comments on the album, especially the progress we made from the “Harbringer” album, so that’s a really good thing for us.
Kevin David: We as well are happy with the result of the album.
Frederikc Vanhille: We put a lot of work in it, and now it’s really amazing and really cool to bring it to life for the people. So, we are on adrenaline.
When someone is listening to the album, what do you hope that they take from the listening experience?
Didier Vanassche: Aggression. Frustration, so probably in life, listen to our music and let it go or something like that. Get your frustrations out.
Frederikc Vanhille: Yeah, the album is layered with different kind of themes, different kind of stuff, so every track brings up other subjects, other emotions with other people. Aggression is definitely one of it. Emotional stuff as well. The first time we did it, we had a softer track as well. “Memento”, it’s called. It’s about a personal loss, so when I hear it, it makes me emotional.
Kevin David: I think it’s relatable to many people because everybody knows somebody that they lost. So, I think that’s a song that people can relate to and maybe other songs as well if they listen to the lyrics.
Frederikc Vanhille: For “Sunchaser” itself, it’s a song about hope, about chasing dreams, chasing light and life. So, that’s a good message we want to send to the world.
What is your favorite part of performing live shows?
Kevin David: To see people having fun. That gives me the motivation to go all the way. It gives you energy.
Frederikc Vanhille: It’s also great to see energy in the crowd, like when we open up the pit. It’s always nice to see the room split and everybody gets crazy. Yeah.
Didier Vanassche To see smiles on people’s faces and stuff like that. For me, the love and reaction we get from the fans after the show, it does a lot to me. That’s why I do it mostly.
Frederikc Vanhille: Just that, just for the fans.
Since the website I work for is from Finland, are there any Finnish bands that you like to listen to or that inspire you?
Frederikc Vanhille: Finnish bands? We played with some Finnish bands, right? Yeah, but I really have to think very deep to think of a Finnish band.
Didier Vanassche: I was a Nightwish fan when I was younger, I still am, but a lot when I was younger.
Kevin David: It was like film music to me.
Frederikc Vanhille: For me personally, Children of Bodom, I grew up with that band. I always was a really big fan of their guitar work, the two brothers, really amazing stuff that they’ve made. If I could say a band from Finland, that would be Children of Bodom. Great stuff, great guitar riffs. When I think about Scandinavia, Norway, Finland, I always think about black metal. Nothing wrong with black metal, I grew up with it.
Didier Vanassche: Yeah, me also.
In “First We Dream, Then We Die”, you have a guest, which is Sven of Mantah. If you had to choose a female artist to collaborate with in another track, which one would you choose?
Kevin David: Jinjer.
Didier Vanassche: I like Poppy recently.
Frederikc Vanhille: For me it would be Lena from Infected Rain. She’s so amazing. We played with them on Metal Days in Slovenia. It was the first time I saw them live. Not only her, but the whole band, the guitar players, they’re going so hard as well on stage. But I especially love her vocals as well. She can do the screams. Her clean singing is amazing as well. So it would definitely go for her. The year we played with them, it was like 40 degrees on the main stage. Really hot as hell. But they were giving everything. It was really cool to see that. Really cool. I think even on their set, their laptop got too warm. They really grew a lot. We saw them last year in Belgium as well, on Parkpop.
What is your point of view about artificial intelligence?
Frederikc Vanhille: It’s something dangerous for us. Things are going so fast. AI is growing faster and faster. For the good and the bad. For the good and the bad, yeah. Some stuff you see online, what will that be in 5 to 10 years? Or 20 years?
Didier Vanassche: That’s why we wrote “Digital Domination“. That’s what it’s all about.
Frederikc Vanhille: Yeah. I’m not a huge fan of it, but you can’t stop it. We’re also addicted to it. Everybody is. I like the old school way when people weren’t on their phones every day and checking every app every 5 minutes. So I’m not really a fan of how humanity evolves that way.
Kevin David: They call it social media, but it’s decreased the social interactions.
Frederikc Vanhille: When I drive my car, I see people in a bus station, everybody is on their phone, not talking to each other. Recently I went to, for example, Thailand. People on their bikes, standing for a red light, everybody is on their phone. It’s really crazy to see. It’s going backwards for me.
Kevin David: It has an inner grip. Yeah. You need it for everything, for banking, papers are going to be gone, you need every ticket on the phone, internet.
Frederikc Vanhille: Everything is getting more digital. Is it good? I don’t know. I’m not a fan.
Since you have a lot of experience both playing live and recording music, which advice would you give to someone that is just starting, either singer or playing an instrument?
Didier Vanassche: Take your time.
Kevin David: Play with… Don’t rush things. For the guitar players, maybe play with a metronome from slow to fast. Learn songs that you like and when it starts to come, you’re going to really enjoy it. You just have to keep persisting because everybody can play an instrument. You just have to pursue.
Didier Vanassche: Don’t be overwhelmed by the social media. All the good guitar players can do everything on video. Don’t believe everything you see. Just believe in yourself and think you’re going to make something of yourself. Just don’t give up. Keep doing what you love to do.
Kevin David: Just don’t let it get in your head if you see a video of a guy playing so fast. I’m never going to make that. You don’t have to make that. The most important thing is that you have fun even though you’re just learning. You will get somewhere. Yeah, true that. Have fun. If you don’t have fun, that’s the main thing.
I want to ask you what is your favorite pizza topping?
Frederikc Vanhille: Yes. I will say it. I like pineapple on a pizza. The funny thing is when we recorded our first album we recorded it in Italy in Ravenna and we recorded it with an Italian guy and we always had discussions about pizzas and what to put on the pizza and always my discussion point was about the pineapple. I’m doing it again. To be honest, it works. It works. To be honest, I think everything matches on pizza. For me personally the more on top, the better. I will make you a pizza one day. You will like it.
Kevin David: Everybody has his own taste. It’s true. We decided what’s bad and what’s wrong. That’s so diverse, you know. A lot of meat.
Didier Vanassche: Meat, vegetables, mozzarella, stuff like that.
Kevin David: I like the black pepper.
Didier Vanassche: Black pepper or chorizo. I like spicy stuff. I like tomato sauce. Actually, he likes a margarita. I can choose barbecue, too. Tomato with bacon, ham, mushroom. I really love red onion on pizza. If it’s enough in the oven, it really has to be baked good. I make some pizza sometimes with the vegetable cauliflower. It’s cauliflower dough.
Kevin David: To be honest, when we were in Italy, I had the best pizza ever there. They’re the best.
Do you have a TV show that you watched recently that you can recommend to me?
Kevin David: The Umbrella Academy.
Frederikc Vanhille: I have to say I’m watching The Office for the second time. I love it. Michael Scott is the best. I’m really into The Office. I’m watching all the seasons for the second time. It’s getting just better and better.
Didier Vanassche: It depends. Do you like serial killer? Mindhunters. I nearly don’t watch TV actually because I have really busy life with children and other stuff to do. But if I watch TV I mostly watch some documentaries about serial killers.
Frederikc Vanhille: A lot of serial killer stuff in this band. Next song is about a serial killer. I’ll do that for you guys.
Didier Vanassche: I’m gonna make a killer song. That was a killer joke.
I wanted to play a little game with you. Instead of being in Belgium we are in Florida. And we have a chocolate stand. So we have to sell hot chocolate to people. How are we gonna do that?
Didier Vanassche: A splash of Bailey’s.
Frederikc Vanhille: Yeah, Italian stuff always sells great in Florida. Maybe with some ice or something. Ice, a splash of Bailey’s and maybe some Captain Morgan in it.
In 2025 we’ve had some amazing stuff, but also we lost Ozzy Osbourne. Was he or Black Sabbath like an influence for Signs of Algorithm?
Frederikc Vanhille: He was the fucking Prince of Darkness. Of course he was. He was the inspiration. My heart broke to be honest.
Didier Vanassche: Yeah, but… To be honest we saw it we saw it coming, right? Ozzy was in bad conditions and…
Kevin David: I’m glad that he made it to that age because it would gone way worse like… Look at Lemmy. You know? Or… His guitarist Randy Rhoads also gone too early. Yeah, it’s a legend lost…
Didier Vanassche: Yeah. We lost already a lot of legends. Yeah.
Kevin David: He just sat on the throne again and… It’s like that he kept his last energy I wanna do one more show The last show, yeah. And he did it and then he thought to himself now it’s my time. I’m too tired of this. I guess it’s something like this. But that’s awesome. But yeah it was beautiful. Back to the Beginning and they ended on Black Sabbath It was beautiful.
Tthank you very much for taking the time to do this interview. Is there anything else that you want to add to our readers?
Frederikc Vanhille: Keep supporting us. Keep streaming. I would like to say come check one of our shows but we have nothing planned in Italy. Maybe we can check for that in 2026.
Kevin David: We love Italy. Especially Pisa.
Frederikc Vanhille: Yeah, but we hope to be back soon in Italy and to play some killer shows with you guys. Definitely.
