Textures return with explosive new single “Closer to the Unknown”

Dutch progressive metalcore veterans Textures are officially back with a bang. The band has released a brand-new single titled “Closer to the Unknown”.

The track was produced internally by guitarist Bart Hennephof and keyboardist Uri Dijk—both longstanding creative forces in the band. Hennephof contributed to production and artwork on their debut Polars, and Dijk’s synth textures have been a defining element since he joined in 2010. Their hands-on approach in the studio helps give “Closer to the Unknown” that signature dense, polished, and rhythmically complex sound that fans expect.

Tragically, last year the band mourned the loss of their original vocalist, Pieter Verpaalen, who passed away in August 2024. Verpaalen fronted the band from 2002 to 2004 and recorded on “Polars”, also contributing lyrics to the early track “Swandive”. The band expressed profound sorrow and paid tribute, highlighting his deep impact on both their music and the Dutch metal community.

Since reuniting in late 2023, Textures have teased new material at festivals like South Of Heaven, and now they’ve delivered an electrifying return with “Closer to the Unknown.” Clocking in at around four minutes, the single packs tight production, intricate rhythms, and explosive energy. While it stands alone for now, fans are optimistic it signals the beginning of a new album cycle.

The current lineup—Daniël de Jongh (vocals), Bart Hennephof and Joe Tal (guitars), Remko Tielemans (bass), Uri Dijk (keys), and Stef Broks (drums)—executes the dense, polished, emotionally charged sound that defined albums like “Dualism” and “Phenotype”. With this comeback single, Textures are back on the radar—and making it loud and clear. Stay tuned for what’s next.
