Swedish post-rock trio Barrens have just released “The Derelict”, the fourth single from their upcoming album “Corpse Lights”, due out September 12th through Pelagic Records. Named after a folk belief involving mysterious colored lights that appear near those close to death, the album reflects the band’s deep connection to themes of catharsis, transformation, and emotional intensity.

Five years in the making, “Corpse Lights” explores a wide dynamic range—shifting between beauty and brutality, serenity and chaos—while sharpening the trio’s already formidable sense of composition. “The Derelict” captures that sonic duality with atmospheric synths, expansive guitar layers, and pulsating drums.

Formed by longtime friends Johan G. Winther, Markku Hildén and Kenta Jansson, the band grew out of earlier collaborations while touring with Scraps of Tape. Their bond and creative chemistry, forged across stages in Europe and China, quickly evolved into Barrens. That shared history led to their 2020 debut “Penumbra”, an emotionally rich and instrumentally dense record that set the tone for what was to come.

“Corpse Lights” builds on that foundation, this time recorded and produced by Kristofer Jönson and mixed/mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna. Alongside its lush synths and layered guitars, the album makes space itself a key element, using silence and atmosphere as much as traditional instruments.

Over the years, Barrens have supported the likes of Mogwai and God Is An Astronaut, signed to Pelagic Records, and even opened the main stage at ArcTanGent Festival in 2023.
