Drone metal legends Sunn O))) have officially joined the Sub Pop roster and dropped their first release under the label. The new effort is a three-track 12″ EP titled “Eternity’s Pillars / Raise the Chalice & Reverential.”
The EP was recorded earlier this year at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville and Sea Grass in Los Angeles. It was co-produced by the core duo Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson with Brad Wood. These tracks mark the first official studio recordings to feature the founding members only, focusing on heavily saturated guitars and synth layers. Because of that stripped-down approach, every detail — from tone and gain to the final arrangement — received special attention. The duo has said that the Pacific Northwest forest served as a guiding influence throughout the sessions.
Each track title carries deep meaning. “Eternity’s Pillars” takes inspiration from a mid-1980s TV program by Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, which explored how music can lead to spiritual transcendence. “Raise the Chalice” references a rallying cry from Northwest musician Ron Guardipee. While “Reverential” pays homage to artists and visionaries who came before. Together, the songs form a meditative yet crushingly heavy listening experience.
The 12″ EP is available in several vinyl variants, including gold through Sub Pop and crystal clear through the band’s own outlets. A standard black pressing is expected later this year. In addition, all three tracks are streaming on major digital platforms, making it easy for fans to dive in right away.
Sunn O))) are currently touring Europe through November 6 performing with minimal gear to highlight pure volume and texture. The tour includes stops in Budapest, Zagreb, Sofia, Athens, Lyon, Utrecht, and more.
This new partnership marks an exciting shift for the band, after years of releasing music through their own label Southern Lord. The band are now expanding their reach without losing their distinct, meditative heaviness. “Eternity’s Pillars / Raise the Chalice & Reverential” stands as a bold statement for the next era of their sound.
