Staying true to tradition – review of “Keep The Fire Burning” by Sacred Leather

So, who of you enjoys some old school heavy metal? I hope, dear reader, that it’s you, because this record will leave you entirely satisfied. Eight years after their debut “Ultimate Force”, American Midwest metallers Sacred Leather return with “Keep the Fire Burning“, a sophomore effort that wears its influences proudly on its studded leather sleeves.

This is an album that knows exactly what it wants to be—a straightforward homage to the glory days of traditional heavy metal, complete with twin-guitar attacks, soaring vocals, and an unwavering commitment to the genre’s time-honored formulas. It’s almost as if it’s the 80s all over again!

The production on “Keep the Fire Burning” is deliberately rooted in these aesthetics—whether this is an intentional stylistic choice or simply the band’s natural approach is unclear, but the result is unmistakably vintage. Tracks like “Wake Me Up” or the closing suite “Mistress Of The Sun” sound nostalgic, heavy and melodic.

The mix captures that classic era sound with all its warmth and grit, eschewing modern production techniques in favor of authenticity. And it’s totally fine, if you ask me. For purists seeking that analog feel, this will be such a welcome choice, though some listeners might find the approach limits a bit what the album’s potential could be.

Sacred Leather demonstrate solid musicianship and a huge commitment to their influences, but the album lacks the spark needed to elevate it beyond competent homage. While there’s nothing that’s poorly executed here, there’s also little that will surprise or excite listeners already familiar with the classic heavy metal playbook. But if heavy metal is your thing, you will love this!
