This is what Slipknot told to Eloy Casagrande about copying Joey Jordison’s drum style

Slipknot drummer Eloy Casagrande says the band never expected him to imitate the late Joey Jordison when he joined the group in 2024. Instead, the musicians made it clear that they wanted him to bring his own personality to the drum kit while preserving the band’s spirit, attitude and energy, in an interview conducted by Radiónica.

I remember since like day one when I was playing with them, Clown came to me and he told me, ‘Man, you don’t have to be concerned about playing everything right. There is no wrong or right, but there is the soul of the band. There is the idea of the band, the attitude, the energy; that’s what we want.’

It’s not like only playing notes correctly, but it’s about having a different attitude. It’s having the energy to keep the soul of the band alive.

Slipknot wanted Eloy Casagrande to be himself

Replacing Jordison, who co-founded Slipknot and left the band in 2013, is a responsibility Casagrande does not take lightly. The drummer acknowledged that following Jordison means filling “big shoes,” but said the band had been explicit that it was not looking for a replica of its original drummer.

“They don’t want to have another Joey in the band. They made that very clear since day one. They’re not trying to make myself play like Joey. They want me to be myself,” Casagrande said.

According to Casagrande, Slipknot values both personality and a willingness to introduce new ideas. He joined the band after a 12-year run with Sepultura, replacing Jay Weinberg, who had been the group’s drummer since 2014.

Casagrande has also spoken about how his Brazilian musical background is finding its way into Slipknot’s new material. He recalled that Crahan initially questioned the Brazilian rhythms he played during rehearsals, reminding him that Slipknot was a metal band. During the current recording sessions, however, Crahan has reportedly suggested incorporating those rhythms into the songs.

In a recent Chaoszine report, Casagrande also discussed the band’s ongoing work on its next album, saying that the group is recording “many, many songs.” A release date for the follow-up to 2022’s “The End, So Far” has not been announced.

Slipknot released the standalone single “Arsenal” in September, marking the band’s first new recording with Casagrande. Guitarist Jim Root has confirmed that the track will not appear on the upcoming studio album.
