Shai Hulud was founded in 1995 by guitarist Matt Fox, bassist Dave Silber, singer Damien Moyal (previously of Culture), drummer Jason Lederman, and guitarist Oliver Chapoy. According to former bassist Jared Allen, “Matt was playing in a number of different kinds of bands, like rock bands, and they just wanted to play some hardcore.” But things didn’t work out with Jason Lederman, so the band started searching for a new drummer. Unfortunately, this is something that the band would grow used to. Matt Fox and Steve Kleisath initially crossed paths in Tampa, Florida, in 1994 when Matt was playing drums for Strongarm, the band Steve eventually joined as drummer.

The band created a six-song demo with their entire lineup intact, and Rob Moran, the bassist for Unbroken, quickly signed them to Revelation Records after receiving their sample via Jeanne Probart, a friend who worked in Revelation’s mail-order division. Revelation decided “it was too difficult to remember” and urged the band to change the name, even though they enjoyed the Shai Hulud demo. On October 31, 1995, a Halloween party for fewer than fifty individuals was held inside Discount’s warehouse as Shai Hulud‘s first performance.
