The English punk music group Sex Pistols was founded in London in 1975. Despite having a brief two-and-a-half-year existence, they had a significant cultural impact on popular music. With their clothing and haircuts having a big impact on the punk subculture and fashion, the band helped start the punk movement in the UK. Future members of bands like Joy Division, New Order, the Smiths, the Fall, Simply Red, Magazine, and Buzzcocks were inspired to pursue music by their performances at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall on June 4 and July 20, 1976. Other artists included Martin Hannett, Tony Wilson, and Alan McGee, the founders of Factory and Creation Records, who later helped to shape England’s independent music scene.
