Marilyn Manson‘s performance at the Teatro del Pueblo in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, on August 10 was met with opposition from conservative and religious demonstrators, according to Billboard. But Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona made it possible for the set, which was set during a state fair, to proceed. Even though the show was a success, the run-up to it was contentious. In an attempt to halt the performance, a group of conservatives started a petition, which eventually gathered 6,000 signatures. A severed cow’s head was then ostensibly displayed in front of a cathedral by Manson‘s supporters in retaliation. The decision by Cardona to host the show, which drew 205,000 people, was unaffected by the actions taken by both parties.
There will always be opposing voices, and Marilyn Manson has faced them not just in Mexico but in other parts of the world too. But if he’s already performed in Rome, the cradle of Catholicism, why couldn’t he perform in San Luis Potosi? This isn’t about religion; it’s about cultural justice, about creating unity, and we must do it through music. Ricardo Gallardo Cardona
