Gibson, the legendary instrument manufacturer with over 130 years of history, has announced a partnership with Sir Brian May. The collaboration results in the Brian May SJ-200 12-string acoustic guitar from Gibson Custom. Designed in close collaboration with Sir Brian May, only 100 units will be produced worldwide.

The idea for this guitar came when I needed a 12-string on tour, and my previous instrument wasn’t performing right on stage,” May explains. “The folks at Gibson kindly offered to make me something special for the tours. One of my requests was to have the octaves placed in reverse from the normal arrangement, as I prefer picking upward and hearing the higher notes while playing.

The guitar features several special characteristics, including:

  • AAA-grade rosewood back and sides
  • AAA-grade Sitka spruce top with Vintage Sunburst finish
  • Mother-of-pearl 8-point star inlays
  • A planetary-themed pickguard designed by Sir Brian May
  • Fishman Matrix electronics

The limited-edition instrument will be available through Gibson.com, Gibson Garage Nashville and London, and authorized Gibson dealers.
