Prong‘s fourteenth studio album is currently scheduled to be released by Napalm Records in November, as per theprp. The groove metal veterans’ leader and guitarist Tommy Victor recently discussed the album’s ideas with Laughingmonkeymusic (see below).
I’ve just finished up a new record… It’s supposed to be out in November. We’re trying to get a tour around it. And we just signed a new deal with Napalm Records.
He responded as follows when asked where the lyrics are going.
This record is like a real one that doesn’t give a shit about what’s going on today. So, we just do what we do and have a good time. It’s definitely modern in its own way, but I’m still trying to do something different, something that is different for the listener or something that is exciting, or trying to. It’s hard, because there’s nothing new under the sun; everything’s been done.
Singer/guitarist Tommy Victor, who was then a sound engineer at the New York City rock club CBGB, and bassist Mike Kirkland, who worked as a doorman there, formed the band in 1986. Shortly after, they signed former Swans drummer Ted Parsons. Prong independently produced a studio album called “Force Fed” (1988) and an EP called “Primitive Origins” (1987), both of which were renowned for their extremely unpolished sound. In 1989, Prong signed with Epic Records. “Beg to Differ”, their first major label album, came out in 1990. Troy Gregory, a bassist, took Kirkland’s position when he departed the group the next year. “Prove You Wrong”, Prong‘s fourth album, featured the band experimenting with electronic samples and programming while maintaining an aggressive yet melodic approach.
Paul Raven and John Bechdel, both from Killing Joke and Murder, Inc., took Troy Gregory’s place in the band by 1993. In 1994, Prong‘s fifth big album, “Cleansing”, was released by the new lineup. Prong‘s most successful album to date, “Cleansing” featured songs like “Broken Peace” and “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck” that are now regarded as Prong classics. It also had a small industrial metal influence. These two tracks’ music videos become mainstays of MTV’s Headbangers Ball. The band opened the Chaos A.D. and Far Beyond Driven tours in America alongside Sepultura and Pantera. Additionally, they embarked on a headline European tour, accompanied by Life of Agony and The Obsessed.
