Primer, which means “something that’s unfinished,” and 55, which alludes to Interstate 55, “the road that drugs run on to get to Chicago through Memphis,” were combined to create the original name. “Introduction to Mayhem” (2000) and “(The) New Release” (2001) are Primer 55‘s two studio albums to date. The band announced another reunion in June 2025 after initially splitting up in 2003 and then getting back together from 2007 to 2015.

Guitarist Bobby Burns and singer J-Sin founded the band in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1997. The two first connected when Burns’ former band opened for J-Sin’s former band. The band’s rap rock sound was a blend of J-Sin’s hip hop and Burns’ heavy metal inspirations. The lineup was later completed with the addition of drummer Josh McLane and bassist Mike “Jr.” Christopher.
