Experimental pop-meets-metal artist Poppy has taken an unexpected turn into the holiday season. She released a heavy reimagining of Wham’s timeless hit “Last Christmas.” The track arrives as part of the Spotify Singles series. It was produced in collaboration with Jordan Fish (ex-Bring Me The Horizon), with whom Poppy has worked closely in recent years.

Instead of embracing Halloween-inspired aesthetics this autumn, Poppy jumped straight into Christmas mode. Her version is a sharp, guitar-driven interpretation of the 1984 classic. It adds a barbed, metallic edge to the well-known melody, fusing festive nostalgia with modern heaviness.

Poppy’s career has been marked by constant reinvention — from her beginnings as an eccentric YouTube personality in the 2010s to her transition into a boundary-pushing musician. Her latest full-length album Negative Spaces (2024) signaled her boldest dive yet into the metal world. It was also produced with Jordan Fish and was praised for its mix of catchy hooks and crushing riffs.

Speaking about working with Fish, Poppy told Metal Hammer last year:

“Jordan is wildly talented, and I am so lucky to call him a friend. Where he swings from creatively is exciting to me. His influences are very broad and, when we talk about music, I feel like we speak a similar language.”

You can listen to Poppy’s metallic take on “Last Christmas” now exclusively on Spotify.
