Misha Mansoor, a guitarist, founded Periphery in 2005. He gradually established a presence on the Internet through the Meshuggah and John Petrucci forums, the sevenstring.org discussion boards, and a regularly maintained Soundclick account. Prior to and throughout Periphery‘s involvement in the metal scene, Mansoor established a reputation for producing most of his own audio using a Pod XT and a home computer. Mansoor has been updating Bulb, his side project, and frequently moves music between the two. Mansoor is still working on several additional musical endeavors, such as Of Man Not of Machine, Haunted Shores, and Four Seconds Ago.
During its early years, Periphery experienced several lineup changes. Prior to fully switching to guitar, Misha played drums and guitar in the band. He then started looking for local talent and discovered local drummer Jason S. Berlin. Travis Orbin took Berlin’s place after Berlin left to pursue interests in Los Angeles. With a focus on creative production, Periphery steadily transitioned from a Meshuggah-influenced sound to a more ambient, melodic sound between 2005 and 2009 while working with vocalists Jake Veredika, Casey Sabol, and Chris Barretto.
