In early 2003, Parkway Drive was established. The street where “The Parkway House,” the band’s home rehearsal facility and venue, was situated inspired their name. According to the 2009 documentary “Parkway Drive: The DVD”, “Parkway House” was like “a little oasis for us and all our friends” because punk rock and hardcore punk bands had few places to rehearse and perform. I Killed the Prom Queen singer Michael Crafter, who was visiting from Adelaide, saw the group and became interested when they performed for the first time at the Byron Bay Youth Centre. Both bands toured Australia in June 2003 after the publication of the I Killed the Prom Queen/Parkway Drive: Split CD.
The band signed with Resist Records, issued the “Don’t Close Your Eyes” EP in 2004, and went on to tour Australia with Shadows Fall, Chimaira, Hatebreed, and Alexisonfire. In an early 2005 comment on the EP, Winston McCall expressed surprise that “for six songs it’s done amazing for us…I’m surprised that kids picked it up so well.” In under two weeks, Parkway Drive recorded their first full-length album, “Killing with a Smile”, with Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz after Shaun Cash replaced Brett Versteeg. It was not the “done thing” for an Australian band to travel abroad and collaborate with a producer of that quality, according to manager Graham Nixon.
