In the autumn of 2023, Mike Portnoy’s notable return to Dream Theater revitalized the entire music industry. For Tama, this event necessitated the creation of a new, extraordinary instrument.
Drawing inspiration from Mike’s original “Purple Monster” kit, Tama developed a distinctive and custom finish tailored to Mike’s artistic vision. Mike Portnoy affectionately named his new kit the “Dream Monster,” reflecting its unique design, as per Blabbermouth.
Tama has now introduced a limited-edition signature snare drum that features the same finish as the “Dream Monster” kit. Limited to only 500 units worldwide, this bold instrument is designed to make a significant visual and sonic impact.
Constructed with an 8mm thick, 9-ply full Bubinga shell, the snare is equipped with 8-lug die-cast hoops that enhance its rich tonal qualities and deliver a sharp, powerful attack. The finish showcases a vibrant white paint that transitions seamlessly into a deep purple sparkle, with each drum being meticulously hand-painted, ensuring no two are identical.
The signature snare drum is equipped with a specialized 3-way tension adjustable strainer, allowing for instant switching between tight, loose, and off settings. This feature enables players to achieve a variety of distinct snare sounds during performance.

Dream Theater’s sixteenth studio album, “Parasomnia,” was released on February 7, 2025, through InsideOut Music. This album signifies the band’s first collaboration with Portnoy since the 2009 release of “Black Clouds & Silver Linings.” The production of “Parasomnia” was overseen by guitarist John Petrucci, with engineering by James “Jimmy T” Meslin and mixing by Andy Sneap. Hugh Syme contributed once again to the album’s cover art, providing his distinctive artistic interpretation. Portnoy was a co-founder of Dream Theater in 1985, alongside Petrucci and bassist John Myung. He participated in ten albums with the band over a span of two decades, beginning with “When Dream And Day Unite” in 1989 and concluding with “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” in 2009, before his departure in 2010.
