Nisse Karlén of Sacramentum has passed away

Author Benedetta Baldin - 26.8.2025

Nisse Karlén, a founding member of Swedish blackened death metal band Sacramentum, passed away by suicide after a protracted battle with mental illness. As reported from MetalInjection, Sacramentum was founded in Falköping in 1990 and immediately gained notoriety for their evocative, melodic style of black/death metal. Karlén, who played guitar first before switching to bass and vocals, guided the group through its formative years and its seminal 1996 debut, “Far Away from the Sun,” which is today regarded as a classic of melodic black metal. Sacramentum put out three albums throughout the years, and because of their forceful yet darkly melodic style, they were frequently compared to Dissection. Numerous contemporary extreme metal artists from North America to Europe bear their influence. Sacramentum has made a comeback in recent years for reissues and festival appearances, solidifying its reputation as one of Sweden’s most cherished underground bands. We wish to send his family, his bandmates and his friends our deepest sympathies.
