MxPx was established in Bremerton, Washington, in July 1992 by Mike Herrera, Yuri Ruley, and Andy Husted, who were all 15 years old at the time of their inaugural performance in Herrera’s parents’ backyard. Herrera and Ruley were classmates at Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale, while Husted attended South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard.
Initially, the ensemble was named Magnified Plaid, reflecting Husted’s admiration for plaid shirts; however, the lengthy title proved cumbersome for promotional materials. As a result, the name was condensed to M.P. on show posters, and Yuri Ruley, utilizing Xs in lieu of periods, crafted the band’s promotional materials, ultimately leading to the four-letter designation.
The band recorded a four-track 7-inch record with Aaron Sprinkle in Seattle, which he subsequently presented to Brandon Ebel of Tooth & Nail Records. In 1993, the group performed a showcase for the label in Herrera’s parents’ garage.
Their first significant album, Pokinatcha, was released in 1994 while the members were still attending high school. Although categorized as Christian punk, the album amalgamated elements of hardcore punk, skate punk, and the underground punk scene, characterized by its raw sound, infectious rhythms, and traditional three-chord guitar style.
