At the end of 2025, an era quietly came to a close when MTV shut down its remaining 24-hour music video channels worldwide. As a result, one of the most influential platforms in music history effectively stopped existing in its original form. However, one developer decided that the story should not end there.
In response, a programmer using the name Flexasaurus Rex launched MTV Rewind, a free web-based app designed to recreate the classic MTV experience. Instead of ads, algorithms or hidden recommendations, the service focuses purely on music videos.
Currently, MTV Rewind hosts more than 33,000 music videos, with more being added over time. The collection spans six decades and is organized into decade-based channels, making discovery simple and intuitive. In addition, the app includes themed channels inspired by legendary MTV programs such as Yo! MTV Raps and Headbangers Ball. For those who prefer chaos over curation, there is also a “Shuffle All” option.
According to its creator, the project was born out of frustration and nostalgia. Flexasaurus Rex explained that MTV played a crucial role in shaping music, fashion and youth culture before shifting away from music videos entirely.
He described the shutdown of MTV’s music channels as a genuinely sad moment, adding that nothing else seemed capable of filling that void. As a result, he decided to act immediately and built MTV Rewind in just 48 hours.
Importantly, MTV Rewind is completely free to use and contains no advertising. Instead, users who enjoy the service are encouraged to support the project directly, helping to keep it online and expanding.
For longtime fans, the app offers a chance to relive the golden age of music television. Meanwhile, newer generations can finally experience what MTV once represented before reality TV took over. If you want to support Flexasaurus Rex you can do so here.
