Swedish doom trio Monolord have dropped “You Bastard”, the lead single from their forthcoming album “Neverending.” The record arrives on May 29, 2026 via Relapse Records and marks the band’s first full-length since “Your Time to Shine” in 2021.
Monolord recorded “Neverending” in Ashland, Oregon with producer Sylvia Massy, known for her work with Tool, System of a Down, and Johnny Cash. The process was unusually thorough. Massy asked vocalist and guitarist Thomas Jäger to submit everything the band had ever written, including riffs and ideas dating back a decade. The band rehearsed twelve songs, recorded eleven, and ultimately chose eight for the album.
Jäger has described the lyrics on “Neverending” as more personal than on previous records, reflecting major life changes and a shift away from the band’s usual focus on religion and superstition toward relationships between people. Notably, “You Bastard” addresses suicide from two perspectives, exploring both the person who dies and those left behind, according to Jäger.
Jäger also notes that “Neverending” is not strictly a doom album but rather a mix of the band’s established sound and something new. The closing track “It’s Neverending” features death metal vocals by Jörgen Sandström, formerly of Entombed, and also known from Grave, Domedagen, and Firespawn. A video for “You Bastard”, filmed by photographer James Rexroad during the recording sessions, is out now.
