Metal For Nepal launches emergency appeal: Nepal Floods, August 2026

Metal For Nepal has launched an emergency fundraising appeal following a severe flash flood that struck Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts on the morning of August 26, 2026, displacing families, damaging infrastructure, and putting children among the communities hit hardest.

WHAT HAPPENED

A sudden flash flood swept down the Bhotekoshi River on the morning of August 26, 2026, tearing through settlements in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, as well as the Gyirong border area on the China-Nepal border. Officials reported no rainfall in the region beforehand; experts suspect the flood may have been triggered by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) originating in Tibet. Flood warnings have since been extended downstream to Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts along the Trishuli River.

KEY FACTS

– Villages and settlements along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers have been washed away or badly damaged, including in the Timure and Syabrubesi areas of Rasuwa.

– Six major hydropower and transmission facilities were damaged – Rasuwagadhi, Chilime, Trishuli 3A, the Trishuli 3B substation, Trishuli Hydropower Station, and Devighat – cutting an estimated 430 MW of power, about one-eighth of Nepal’s installed capacity.

– The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police have been deployed with helicopters for search and rescue; operations are ongoing.

– The full human toll is still being assessed by authorities. Early media reports include unconfirmed estimates of casualties and missing persons, which we are not repeating here until verified.

– A significant number of children are reported among those affected – displaced from homes, separated from caregivers, or without access to shelter, clean water, and basic necessities.

OUR RESPONSE

Metal For Nepal is mobilizing to support affected communities, as we did during the 2015 Nepal earthquake. We are working through our established network of local NGO partners on the ground to deliver relief as quickly and effectively as possible, from emergency supplies and clean water to longer-term rebuilding support. While our response will prioritize the welfare of children – who are especially vulnerable in the days following a disaster like this – our relief efforts are intended to reach affected community members of all ages.
