Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns, frontman of Finntroll, releases “Remains”, a collection of previously unreleased tracks from his archive

After reviving the early recordings of the Twilight Moon and Degenerate projects, Finnish metal icon Mathias Lillmåns, best known as the vocalist of Finntroll and …And Oceans, presents an album of previously unreleased tracks: the largest collection of archive material ever released. Along with the album’s release, the video for the track ‘Sanguine Sadism‘ is also available.

With Remains, out today on Stormbound Records, Lillmåns presents his first complete retrospective: a 17-track anthology featuring unreleased and forgotten recordings from bands such as Twilight Moon, Remains, Degenerate, Chthonian, Vere and Observant.

While previous EPs offered brief glimpses into Lillmåns‘ formative years, “Remains” represents a complete vision, a timeline spanning three decades of bands, stylistic shifts, and the gradual emergence of a voice that would become an essential part of contemporary Finnish metal.

“Most listeners know me as a singer,” explains Lillmåns, “but with this collection I wanted to show the transformation I went through: from an instrumentalist who preferred to stay in the shadows to a true frontman, the one everyone knows today.“

Drawing on sessions that were thought to have been lost in time, recovered from cellars, rediscovered on MiniDiscs, extracted from unlabelled tapes and old forgotten hard drives, “Remains” tells a story of trials, instinct and evolution. Through these recordings, the listener follows Lillmåns on his journey of growth: from his early days on bass, to when he began singing, to his full affirmation as frontman.

For those who want to learn more about his story, the CD edition includes personal notes written by Lillmåns himself, in which he recounts his beginnings of improvisation and reel-to-reel recordings with Twilight Moon. The roughness of the “Remains”‘ garage recordings and the first studio notes with Degenerate resurface. We then hear the deliberately abrasive spirit of Chthonian, the creative hurricane of a single night that gave birth to Vere, and the more mature, self-produced approach of Observant. Together, these recordings paint a concise and revealing portrait of the artistic evolution that characterised the artist’s early years.

Remastered by Owe Inborr at Wolfthrone Studios, “Remains” is available from today on all major digital platforms and on CD via Stormbound Records.
