Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Mastodon is an American heavy metal ensemble that came into being in the year 2000. For a remarkable span of 24 years, the band’s core members — Troy Sanders on bass and vocals, Brent Hinds on lead guitar and vocals, Bill Kelliher on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, and Brann Dailor on drums and vocals — maintained their consistent lineup until Hinds’s departure in March 2025.

Mastodon has put out eight studio albums alongside various other recordings. Their 2002 inaugural album, “Remission”, earned considerable praise from critics for its distinctive musical style. The band’s second full-length effort, “Leviathan”, is a thematic album inspired by Herman Melville’s novel, Moby-Dick. In 2004, three prominent magazines—Revolver, Kerrang!, and Terrorizer—bestowed upon “Leviathan” the “Album of the Year” honor.

From their third album, “Blood Mountain”, released in 2006, the track “Colony of Birchmen” received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2007. “Blood Mountain “was succeeded in 2009 by “Crack the Skye”, and in 2011 by “The Hunter”. The latter achieved significant commercial success in the United States, debuting at the tenth position on the Billboard 200 chart. “The Hunter” includes the song “Curl of the Burl,” which garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance in 2012.
