Lowheaven unleash nightmarish new single “Mercy Death” ahead of debut album release

Toronto post-metal conjurors Lowheaven, fresh off signing with MNRK Heavy, have unveiled the crushing new video and single “Mercy Death” as a brutal precursor to their debut full-length, “Ritual Decay”, due August 29th, 2025.

Recorded under the intense guidance of producer Brett Romnes (I Am The Avalanche, Extinction A.D.) and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna), “Ritual Decay” channels heavy distortion, shifting sonic dynamics, and “earphone candy,” as vocalist/guitarist Dan Thomson puts it. The album digs into themes of social isolation, loss of faith, and personal darkness, with nods to 1990s trailblazers like Cave In and Deftones.

Vocalist and guitarist Dan Thomson said the new single felt like a soundtrack to his nightmares and marked a turning point when he realized how heavy the band was becoming. He revealed that he reworked the lyrics in a late-night studio session, obsessing over every line in a solitary attempt to process what he was feeling.

Guitarist and keyboardist Alex Pley noted that the working title for the song was “Godzilla”, which fit its crushing vibe. Writing it with Thomson and bassist Mikey Buchta early on helped cement the band’s sonic identity—something powerful, terrifying, and apocalyptic. He also warned that the song’s ending is so intense it could emotionally wreck unprepared listeners.

Guitarist Pat Pajak described the track as feeling like an elastic band stretched to its limit, never quite snapping. For him, it captures the band’s trademark sense of dread while also weaving in moments of melody and emotional resolution, showcasing the range they aim to deliver.

Earlier this spring, the band released “Chemical Pattern”, another track from the album that reflects on feelings of collapse and chaos during uncertain times. Both singles give a taste of what to expect from “Ritual Decay”, which was recorded in a centuries-old church in New Jersey. The band immersed themselves in horror films and sleep deprivation to tap into the bleak, oppressive atmosphere heard across the ten-track album—a collision of post-hardcore, screamo, sludge, and blackened noise.
