Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy and Culture Club frontman Boy George surprise with the release of a duet, entitled “Let The Flowers Grow“, along with a music video. You can check out the video below:
Tim Rim Hill was in charge of the video art. The song was produced by Killing Joke bassist Youth who is also playing the guitars on “Let The Flowers Grow“.
Peter Murphy describes the creation process of the song as follows:
“I was recording my new album in Spain with Youth (Killing Joke). Whilst listening to a playback of a song during a lull, I heard a piece of music that was coming from his cell phone. It caught my ear for its melodic beauty as well as a Roy Orbison-like voice that sang the song.” – Peter Murphy
When Peter Murphy discovered that it was an unfinished demo written by Boy George, he was intrigued and asked Youth if he could work on the partial song:
“In a matter of 20 minutes, we had ‘Flowers’ finished.”
– Peter Murphy
Boy George adds:
“When I heard the mix, I was satiated in every way. I have always loved Pete’s voice and his writing on this adds a beautiful darkness. The production feels very epic, like Scott Walker.” – Boy George
While the initial message was about personal acceptance of being gay, the context expanded during the creation of the duet to include race, gender, creed and religion, with the goal to deliver a message of acceptance and hope:
“With everything going on in the world about identity, ‘Let The Flowers Grow’ feels very powerful. It makes me dizzy and proud.”
– Boy George
Peter Murphy adds:
“Boy George loved it and I’m so glad that he did.” – Peter Murphy
The stand-alone single “Let The Flowers Grow” was released yesterday (8 November 2024) via Metropolis Records and can be purchased digitally here.
