Grand Rapids post-hardcore stalwarts La Dispute have unleashed a powerful new single and video titled “Sibling Fistfight at Mom’s Fiftieth / The Un-sound”, marking Act III of their much-anticipated conceptual album “No One Was Driving the Car”, due September 5th via Epitaph Records. This track stands out as the most direct and song-oriented of the batch, clocking in under five minutes and featuring Jordan Dreyer’s urgent, bark-like spoken-word style set against a driving instrumental push.
The release arrives as part of a five-song swell showcasing the album’s third act. The collection, including “Self-Portrait Backwards,” “The Field,” “Landlord Calls the Sheriff In,” and “Steve”, deepens a narrative journey through memory, trauma, and familial tensions—highlighted by the titular sibling fight at their mother’s birthday.
“No One Was Driving the Car” is the band’s first full-length in six years and is a self-produced concept album inspired in part by the 2017 thriller First Reformed and reflections on technological anxiety—from self-driving car accidents to societal control.
Complementing the new release, the band have outlined their plans to support the album with a major tour. It kicks off in Europe in July, with a North American leg beginning September 5th in Detroit—coinciding with the album’s official release date. They also plan to stage an art exhibition in Grand Rapids on September 3th, bringing the album’s visual and conceptual themes into a gallery space.
