King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard dive into orchestral rock with new single “Grow Wings and Fly”

Australia’s psychedelic rock powerhouse King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard has unveiled “Grow Wings and Fly”, the third single from their upcoming 27th studio album, “Phantom Island”, set for release on June 13th through their own (P)Doom Records.

This latest track continues the band’s adventurous dive into orchestral rock, blending lush, layered arrangements with deeper, introspective themes. According to frontman Stu Mackenzie, “Phantom Island” is intended as a way to “build connection” with listeners — a shift from the group’s more experimental earlier work.

“Grow Wings and Fly” has already made its live debut, having been performed in November 2024 during shows in Austin, Texas and New Orleans. It was featured as an extension of the song “Shanghai”, generating buzz among fans well before its official release thanks to improvised previews during gigs.

The music video, directed by Hayden Somerville, stars pianist Ambrose Kenny-Smith emerging from the sea and eventually returning to the waves. Somerville described the video as “a sea-dwelling creature that inspires both nausea and joy at once.”

Recorded in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, “Phantom Island” features ten tracks, including the previously released singles “Phantom Island” and “Deadstick”. The album offers a more serene, orchestral contrast to 2024’s “Flight b741”, showcasing a softer side of the band’s ever-evolving sound.

Following the album’s release, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will embark on a tour across Europe and the US, performing alongside local orchestras. The tour culminates on November 4, 2025, at London’s Royal Albert Hall with the Covent Garden Sinfonia conducted by Chad Kelly. Fans can also expect a handful of “rave set” shows focusing on the band’s electronic material.
