Kerry King started his own solo project a year after Slayer broke up in 2019. It included him on guitar, Mark Osegueda on vocals (Death Angel), Paul Bostaph on drums (Slayer), Phil Demmel on guitar (Machine Head, Vio-lence) and Kyle Sanders on bass (Hellyeah). The group hasn’t changed since its 2024 debut. Even though Slayer is back again, King stated earlier this year that he still had plans to work on a second solo album. According to him, the project has had around a dozen songs demoed; all that needs to be done is find the time to record them. Additionally, Kerry King and his solo band performed twice in Japan only last week: once in Tokyo on October 13 and again in Osaka on October 16. The guitarist made sure to incorporate songs like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Slayer on the band’s live setlist in addition to the many Kerry King tunes that fans were treated to, as reported by MetalInjection.
Recently, he shared what it was like to be at the “Back to the Beginning” event.
Yeah, I made a point to be there all day at the ‘Back To The Beginning’ show. My friends in Mastodon were playing first, so I wanted to see them. I know Halestorm was playing early; I wanted to see them. I saw Alice In Chains soundcheck the day before. I watched Ozzy and Black Sabbath play… They had something set up like a giant LED screen backstage with its own P.A., so I just parked myself right in front of it and I had basically a front-row seat to the whole show for those two. I was on stage for Metallica. It was a good day. When you do a festival, like we’re doing today [at Brutal Assault], a lot of times I don’t know who we’re playing with, but I knew ‘Back To The Beginning’ for months, so I had a whole day planned out to watch my friends play. And it was cool. And with Ozzy passing away very soon thereafter, I’m very happy that I was able to be a part of that.
