Former Judas Priest and current KK’s Priest guitarist Kenneth “K.K.” Downing has shared his thoughts on participating in Black Sabbath‘s upcoming farewell concert, scheduled for July 5 in Birmingham, the band’s birthplace.
The historic event will feature Ozzy Osbourne joining original members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward for their first performance together in two decades. The show, titled “Back To The Beginning,” was announced at Villa Park by Sharon and Tony on February 5. The concert will benefit several charities, including Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice.
Ozzy, who disclosed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2020, will perform a solo set before uniting with Sabbath for what’s being billed as his final performance. The event will also feature a supergroup including Downing alongside rock luminaries such as Slash, Duff McKagan, Billy Corgan, and Tom Morello.
Speaking to Blabbermouth.net on February 9, Downing expressed: “This will be an incredibly emotional and historic event! The final farewell to the ultimate gods of metal. Black Sabbath and Ozzy will return to their home in Aston, Birmingham, where it all began, and I am deeply honored to be part of this momentous occasion.“
He reflected on his early days in Birmingham: “I vividly remember growing up in the suburbs over 50 years ago and witnessing the emergence of this band that would pioneer a completely new genre of music. It was more than just music — it was the sound, the performance and the atmosphere that created an irresistible phenomenon.“
Downing concluded by emphasizing the event’s significance: “This will undoubtedly be one of the most important moments in rock and metal history, and I look forward to standing alongside fans and fellow musicians to honor Black Sabbath’s legacy in their hometown.“
