John Thomas Bratland also known as Jontho of Norwegian black metal band Ragnarok has passed away at 48 years old due to cardiac arrest. He was the drummer of the band. He also performed with Taake, Tsjuder, Kharon, Fester and more. On behalf of the Chaoszine team, our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and loved ones.
Following their formation in 1994, Ragnarok released their inaugural demo titled “Et Vinterland i Nord”, featuring the original lineup comprising bassist Jerv, drummer Jontho, guitarist Rym, and vocalist Thyme. Subsequently, the band secured a contract with the renowned label Head Not Found Records, which issued Ragnarok‘s debut album “Nattferd” in 1995. Dissatisfaction with Head Not Found Records prompted intentions to depart in 1996; however, the label persuaded them to extend their contract for two additional albums by offering a more favorable deal. This contractual obligation precluded Ragnarok from accepting an offer from Century Media, who had expressed interest following a performance in Oslo later that year. In 1997, work commenced on their second album, “Arising Realm”, which included contributions from Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir on keyboards. The band embarked on their first tour in 1998, performing eight shows across Denmark and Germany, along with participation in the Blood Log Festival in Leipzig. At the end of that year, Ragnarok began recording their third album, “Diabolical Age”, which was completed in late 1999. By the time of its release, vocalist Thyme had departed, and he was replaced by Astaroth, with Sander joining as a second guitarist. Soon after, Sander was dismissed due to incompatibility with the band’s dynamics and was replaced by Lord Arcamous shortly after “Diabolical Age”‘s release in 2000.
In 2000, Ragnarok undertook a brief tour with the Swedish band Satanic Slaughter. It was during this period that it became evident that Astaroth was unable to sustain his role within the band.
Following the tour, Astaroth departed from Ragnarok. Lord Arcamous temporarily assumed the role of vocalist for the recording of the album I“n Nomine Satanas” under Regain Records.
Subsequently, in 2002, Lord Arcamous was replaced by Hoest from the band Taake.
