Jello Biafra landed in hospital on March 7th after a hemorrhagic stroke triggered by high blood pressure. His team cancelled all upcoming appearances. The San Francisco punk pioneer, best known as the original Dead Kennedys frontman and Alternative Tentacles Records founder, remains stable and now focuses on rehabilitation.

In a personal statement, Biafra described waking up to find his left leg had given way as he got out of bed. His left arm also failed him when he tried to break the fall. He attempted to stand again but could not manage it. Despite the scare, he struck a determined note. He acknowledged a long road of rehab ahead but expressed confidence he still has plenty left to give.

The news breaks just days after a public clash with his former band. Punk in the Park came under fire after festival owner Cameron Collins of Brew Ha Ha Productions donated to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Dead Kennedys confirmed they would honour their booked Pittsburgh and Vallejo dates but ruled out any future Punk in the Park appearances.

Alternative Tentacles confirmed further updates will follow. The label added that everyone connected to it feels relieved Biafra is stable and receiving proper care.

”I hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me and I fell to the floor. I couldn’t even break the fall with my left arm because it wasn’t working either. I tried to hop back up again, and I couldn’t. I realized I had “fallen and I can’t get up!”

It was this point I thought, “Oh shit, I’m having a stroke!”

I still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now I gotta lotta of rehabbing to do.”
